Community Participatory Appraisal in Education Programmes in Vanuatu
The long term aim is to collaborate with local people involved in the pre-school programmes in the villages to develop a participatory tool whereby they can regularly take part in the appraisal and refinement of the programmes. The study developed capabilities based focus groups utilised in the researcher's previous studies in other regions of the Pacific. Interviews were conducted with groups of self-selecting parents of pre-school age children enrolled in village pre-schools. Analysis of the transcripts of the focus group interviews reveal some significant outcomes from the pre-school programmes as well as parent suggestions for future development and resource utilisation. There is scope for the application of this methodology by the management of the pre-school programmes in the future as a regular means of appraising and reporting on their activities.
