Sustainable Valorization of Biodiversity Products: Creating Networks to promote Local Qualities
Biodiversity products can be considered as a continuity of its region of origin, strongly characterized by its edaphic and climatic conditions, and as the result of local traditions of knowledge that are embedded in its production. It represents a cultural and social expression of a certain community, a sign of local intellectual heritage. The increasing interest and awareness of cultural and social aspects embedded in products contributes to the valorization of environmental and socially friendly practices. Therefore, a systemic, integrated approach is fundamental to sustain the elaboration of coordinated actions, thus promoting long-term sustainable development. Some experiences are presented in order to illustrate sustainable relationships that support the valorization of local products. These examples reinforce the crucial communication role of Design in allowing the consumer to understand the commitment on the part of the producer. Planning and promoting communication are some of the more evident roles played by a designer aiming to promote local development. Other Design actions are connected to the recognition and the expression of identifying features and the promotion of a united culture to protect local resources as part of territorial identity.
