Information Systems traditionally involve the application of computing to the problems of organizations. Geographic Information Systems are characterized by spatial objects which have locations (e.g addresses, landmarks, geopolitical boundaries, etc.) and data associated with them (e.g. demographic information, value, etc.). While many GIS systems are associated with scientific data, emerging applications and research involves solving problems in a wide variety of situations including social sciences, business and education. For those unfamiliar with this powerful paradigm this workshop will introduce new ways to look at and develop solutions to a wide variety of problems.
This workshop will give a brief overview and demonstration of GIS using the popular ESRI ARCView system. Exercises will include a brief GIS analysis to reinforce the introductory concepts. Target Audience: Educators and researches new to GIS

Keywords: Geographic Information Systems, GIS
Stream: Cultural Sustainability
Presentation Type: 60 minute Workshop Presentation in English
